Back in the late 80's I met Dave Silva, and together we formed a band called Colony. I had met Dave informally at a North Hollywood rehearsal studio when he was doing a stint with The Horse Soldiers, an electric Cival War revival band fronted by mutual friends Jeff Wolfe and Bob Willingham. But it was when I responded to his advertisement in the Recycler that I got to sit down and discuss his vision for a record he wanted to make.

Dave had taken his drum kit to a large warehouse and recorded a bunch of beats using a small tape recorder. The sound he got was huge, and it was to form the basis of the Colony sound. I could recognize there was something unconventional going on and I was excited to be a part of it.

By the time I had come along Carl Byron had been enlisted to play keyboards and contribute some material to the upcoming CD. Dave's old school hood friend Rick May contributed his bass playing to the project. We booked our rehearsals at West L.A. Studio Services and they were quick and we pounded through the material in a military-like fashion.

Dave booked two days to record at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. We recorded the record live on day one, and used the second day to add some vocals, extra percussion and some keyboard and guitar solos. The process went quickly and we had a good time. We set a date for doing a mix but Dave's appendix burst and he ended up in the hospital. I did a rough mix with our engineer, Michael Kerns, and delivered it to Dave, but he was upset over the sound of the drums. We set some more mixing dates, and Dave got to work with Michael to slather on all the reverb he was wanting to hear. We mastered the disk at a place called Quad Tech, and sent it out for duplication.

While all this stuff was going on, we were simultaneously working on some visuals for the album cover, mainly a giant tiki head we made out of papier- mâché. Dave picked up 4 large cardboard wardrobe boxes and we wired them together in my garage. We used chicken wire mesh to form the 'skull' of the tiki head by attaching it to the boxes and sculpting it into shape. Then we covered the whole thing in papier- mâché.
